Inverse Doppler Effects in Pipe Instruments.

Abstract
Music is older than language, and for most of human history music holds our culture together. The pipe instrument is one of the most popular musical instruments of all time. Built on the foundation of previous flute and flute-like acoustic metamaterial models, we herein report the experimental results of the inverse Doppler effects discovered in two common pipe instruments - recorder and clarinet. Our study shows that the inverse Doppler effects can be detected at all seven pitches of an ascending musical scale when there is a relative motion between a microphone (observer) and abovementioned two pipe instruments (source). The calculated effective refractive indices of these two pipe instruments are negative and varying across a set of pitches, exhibiting a desired characteristic of broadband acoustic metamaterials. This study suggests that recorder and clarinet may be the earliest man-made acoustic metamaterials known so far, offering a new explanation why pipe instruments have enjoyed wide popularity in Europe and Asia over the past hundreds and thousands years. This newly discovered phenomenon would also offer a clue into designing next-generation smart broadband double-negative acoustic metamaterials with varying refractive index.

The mechanism of metamaterials is based on resonance in periodic structures, such as electromagnetic met-
amaterials with metallic wires exhibiting negative permittivity or with split resonance rings displaying negative
magnetic permeability 26,27 and acoustic metamaterials with a high-density solid core and a soft coating exhibiting
a negative dynamic mass density 28 or subwavelength Helmholtz resonators with a negative effective dynamic
bulk modulus 29 . The bandwidth of this resonance is narrow in nature. Previous theories 30,31 and experiments 32,33
demonstrated that a metamaterial in each distinct unit cell resonates at its inherent frequency and elicits almost
no coupling effect with other materials; thus, a weak interaction system can be formulated. The total response of
a weak interaction system can be treated as an overlap of the single resonance spectrum of each type of unit cell.
Multiband or broadband metamaterials can be developed using a simple method because of this intriguing fea-
ture. Moreover, in our previous work 34 , we have demonstrated the feasibility to realise broadband negative mass
density by using a meta-atom cluster model.

Acoustic artificial meta-molecules can simultaneously produce negative mass density and bulk modulus 35 ; as
such, a meta-molecule cluster is formed by combining meta-molecules with different resonant frequencies in a
particular arrangement.
Conclusion
We propose a model of ‘flute-like’ acoustic meta-cluster sets and developed a broadband, omni-directional and
double-negative acoustic metamaterial. The experimental results show that the metamaterials can manipulate
sound waves, such as the broadband negative refraction, the inverse Doppler effect and the shift from the Doppler
effect to the inverse Doppler effect, in a system consisting of a normal medium and the metamaterial. The inverse
Doppler effect of the flute implies that complex broadband metamaterials can be implemented with present tech-
nologies. The acoustic meta-cluster sets provide a new way to design and fabricate metamaterials with an arbitrar-

Metamaterials rely on reverse time or the inverse or transverse Doppler Effect. So by using the natural number overtones as the music scale the ancient oldest human music instruments also exhibit a metamaterial acoustive negative refraction. This means that as the musician and instrument moves toward the listener then the frequency goes down in pitch (in opposite to the normal Doppler Effect of a frequency pitch perceived as going up at the time wavelength is compressed towards the listener). So this means that the "phase wave" is like the shock wave but it is going from the future in reverse and so the phase wave is in the opposite direction to the group wave going forward.
There are two ways for this to happen. One is to have a subwavelength resonance of the actual sound and this is from the sideways resonance of the tube or sphere versus the lengthwise resonance. The second secret is by using the natural number harmonics this enables each hole to be its own self reversal of phase in relation to the whole length of the tube itself. So the natural number resonance itself is creating a reversal of phase via the natural overtones also having a subharmonic that is noncommutative phase to the root tonic. This means that the inverse octave is effectively an enharmonic root tonic due to the noncommutative time-frequency resonance. So for example is C is 1 and the octave C is 2 then 2/3 is C to F while 3/2 is C to G and therefore F=3=G at the SAME time as noncommutative phase, creating a negative refraction superluminal sound wave.
